10x talk: Exploring Radical Life Extension
3 min reading time

Dr. Bill Andrews, CEO of Sierra Sciences, and Liz Parrish, CEO of BioViva Sciences, discussed “A Cure for Aging?” at this year’s 10x Medical Device Conference.

Here are the entire video, slides, and transcript: http://medgroup.biz/Cure-for-Aging. It’s a fascinating talk.

Liz starts with a statistic: 100,000 people die of aging each day, noting, until recent history humans would die from infectious diseases. As science improves, so does our ability to live longer – until we die of complications from old age.

Bill gives easy-to-understand insight into the role of telomeres in our death and his work with Telomerase, an enzyme at the core of his work to extend human life.

Treating biological aging as a disease, Bill and Liz combined forces to create BioViva Fiji and are building a large-scale production facility and clinic to provide a gene-therapy approach to cure aging.

They expect human trials in a year’s time.

Back in September 2015 I introduced Bill’s work with the discussion “Do you want to die someday?” at http://bit.ly/die-someday and members gave some very interesting comments. If you have time, give it a read.

And meet Bill at RAAD (Revolution Against Aging and Death) which he describes as “the Woodstock of Radical Life Extension.”

I research patents & design products to get a patented competitive position: Over 30 patents.
If people on average won’t even go to a doctor “until it hurts,” how are you going to get them to look at telomeres and then try to do something about it in their 20s? We have had basic screening tests for decades for some things and only about 25% of them will return the likes of the Hemoccult tests to their doctor/lab.

Without some serious education that people will accept about helping themselves while they still feel healthy, no amount of Telomere enhancement is going to fix the 133 million with chronic illness and the 60 million with 2 or more chronic illnesses.

Unfortunately, the education system has become “dumbed down” with “Obamacare will take care of your healthcare needs” and “Medicare is all you need” attitudes for younger generations. Smart people will pay attention, but the other 80-90% just let things slide by.

The classic case is a woman I met yesterday who spent 15 years on oxygen and ventilators. She got one new lung at age 70 and can finally function again.

Telomere therapy looks more promising than I thought. It will still be years before we have any idea how well this works in humans, but I am impressed that they already have a prototype therapy for humans. It’s too early to predict 150-year lifespans, but if we can get even half the effect of this 2012 mouse test (http://scitechdaily.com/gene-therapy-extends-mouse-lifespan-by-24/), this technology will be the single biggest contributor to life extension in human history.

As a matter of fact ,I am of the view that Man or Science can never ever extend the Life period of a human being by any means except the fact that with the development of Science and Technowlogy ,the end results of Aging problems could be controlled with proper food , medication ,exercises and by creating an atmosphere conducive to peaceful and happy moments.

Very interesting talk! There is no question that developing technologies to lengthen Telomeres can lead to unprecedented medical breakthroughs, ultimately improving the quality and length of human life. However, can these technologies become affordable for the masses? Or will these end up serving the 1% who can afford them?
