My favorite was the artificial pancreas. Least favorite was the 360 wheeled car (not actually an invention because they have not reduced it to practice, and was probably in Popular Mechanics 50 years ago). Haven’t these guys heard of CRISPR? http://time.com/4572079/best-inventions-2016/ The 25 Best Inventions of 2016Every year, TIME selects the best inventions that are making the world better, smarter and-in some cases-a little more fun. As Dr. Jeffrey Shuren, director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, said in an agency news release, “This first-of-its-kind technology can provide people with type 1 diabetes greater freedom to live their lives without having to consistently and manually monitor baseline glucose levels and administer insulin.”

Yup. The mechanical "artificial pancreas" has actually also been around a long time. But now it is getting more practical and trouble free. ...And smaller.

Yes, Segrio. But remember that infinite dollars will not buy inventions that do not exist. The patent systems motivate people to work hard, e.g., developing inventions that save people, become less expensive with time, and are eventually donated to the public.

I like the Vitamin A rich sweet potato. The world needs such innovations. I agree that the artificial pancreas is also a true innovation. Many of the other items would in my mind be categorized under the "chachka" label (land fillers).

The "Artificial Pancreas," which is a closed loop insulin delivery system, hasn't really been around a long time. Medtronic just got FDA approval a month ago and expect to launch commercially in April of next year. It is only in the recent past that the continuous glucose sensors were good enough for closed loop control. Full disclosure - our company is doing something similar, and it wouldn't surprise me if most insulin pumps have closed loop feedback systems in the next decade. For people with T1D, this is going to be a huge improvement. Absolutely NOT a cure, but a huge improvement in quality of life.
