What is the best pulse oximeter?
< 1 min reading time

As originally asked by Sam Anson.

A friend of mine is considering new pulse oximeters for one of the UK’s leading cystic fibrosis units and has asked me to post this question to the group. She’s looking for the best product in terms overall reliability? Please advise.

Thanks Dr.Sayed!

Dear Swathi,

Some times it is very important to differentiate between CO and O2 , like in some cases specially Cavil Defense in CO toxicity all pulse Oximeters give total sum of CO&O2(asO2) , but it is fetal mistake and lead to death , only Masimo can do and it is Patent for Masimo . So with Masimo we can get CO2 , O2 & CO .

I can vouch for Masimo as well. They have good development tools for OEMs to integrate their pulse-ox hardware.

I agree with Jim Moseley’s statement about Massimo. A little known fact outside the industry is that several of the MAJOR manufacturers of standalone pulse oximeters, and oximeters integrated with additional parametric monitors, including ICU/CCU bedside monitors use either Massimo’s algorithm or integrate an assembly from Massimo that includes their software and hardware. I don’t know how long Massimo has been considered the gold standard but as memory serves, it’s been at least 20 years. In fact, I have seen quotation requests from sizable hospitals actually specify that the oximeter must use Massimo’s algorithm. At one point I was working for a monitoring company which had developed its own pulse oximeter that outperformed Massimo’s using every test and artifact they could think of. Ultimately, the design was scrapped because too many of their customers wanted Massimo and weren’t even interested in seeing anything about this company’s own oximeter.

Like it or not, Massimo is the gold standard and it’s going to be EXTREMELY difficult, if not impossible, to get a large enough supporting customer base to change that perspective.

you can think of Nonin puse oxy meter

It is light weight small in size ideal for intermittent checking of SaO2

The after sales service is available in many countries

As Ali Alloush said, “All well known vital sign monitors manufacturers have reliable and accurate pulse oximeters”. In my opinion, the most matchable unit is the best according to the aspects of application and finance, etc.

The I would ask question is do you want something that is portable, continuos or is it to do one off reading? once you know which one, then ask the question again. The NONIN finger ones are cheap, they also get taken home in peoples pockets. Massimo have what is regarded as the gold standard, Nelcor are also good. You will find that GE and a number of other big players, also have their own PO monitoring, that too is good.

I use everyday the ‘oxywatch’ which is FDA-approved and approved by health-canada
It costs about 100 can dollars

It depends on what you are looking for. If you want the highest level of accuracy, an actual transcutaneous measurement of tc02 and pc02 that will correlate with blood gases, Radiometer’s portable TCM unit is the best on the market.
It is used widely in pediatric and adult ICUs, also in wound care. It should be reviewed for your consideration.

Nonin has the best product as also mentioned by Mark & Jonas above.

There are lot of good pulse oxymeters in the market. All well known vital sign monitors manufacturers have reliable and accurate pulse oxymeters; like Philips, Nihon Khoden …, but for me Masimo is still the best and you can bet on it.

The question to ask is which pulse oximeter is best for the sick patient? All pulse oximeters will provide a numerical read-out but the manufacturer who’s oximeter’s consistently correlate with a side-by-side Arterial Blood Gas were the Nonin Onyx on low perfusion/poor perfusion CF and ARDS patients. The Onyx is low cost and as the saying goes, “it takes a licking and keeps on ticking”

None is perfect, but meantime probably Masimo is the best. 🙂

Masimo is betting big that it’s pulse oximeter is the best:

This is a bit beyond your typical care providers’ pulse ox but I thought it would be worth sharing here in this discussion. It’s an innovative personal spirometer empowering one to easily monitor lung function anytime and anywhere. Another great innovative invention from one of our networking members. I have found Masimo to offer a full line that covers many needs. The company continues to do unique research to expand the data that can be obtained with their devices. It is extremely reliable, does well in challenging patients.
