I would be very interested in feedback on positive or negative experiences of group members with rapid prototyping/lean startup principles in medtech startups, and even in the introduction of new products by more established organizations. To what extent are such principles known, embraced, ignored or rejected by your companies? Please see: How to Increase Chances of NIH SBIR Grants 333%?Rapid Prototyping at Google X I recently attended a rapid prototyping workshop led by Tom Chi, a founding member of Google X, during the 2016 Mentor source: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/78665/78665-6210666637536956420 Marked as spam

Very appropriate for new products when one needs to explore a large design space and there is a high probability that a new design will prove impractical once implemented. Many standard prototyping materials and technologies are poorly suited for prolonged contact with internal tissues or even the skin - the product of a run-of-the-mill 3D printer is difficult to clean and could not serve as a cup, let alone a device with repeated bodily contact. So prototyping equipment for implants comes at a premium. That is not to say that a concept demonstration or model for in vitro testing cannot be made for a fraction of the cost with typical equipment - just that a transition would be needed before clinical trials.

The group’s 10x Medical Device conference this coming May in San Diego has a highly relevant session on Day 3: Why Haven't Medical Devices Embraced Lean and Agile? From the session abstract: “Regulations and standards do not prevent the adoption of lean and agile methods but many companies’ quality systems do. Understanding these barriers and how to modify quality system procedures is key to more efficient medical device development and improved compliance.”
