I am working on a blood separation project. I was hoping someone can tell me the names of OEM’s in the business that make blood separations equipment. I know about Haemonetics but no others….

I consulted to Terumo at their Fremont location for 7 years helping develop the Tacura chairside separator. I did both component and system testing (including the full Microbial Challenge to certify the multi-channel rotary seal). After all that, they pulled the plug just as it was going into production and bought COBE instead. I’ll never understand corporate finance.

It depends on how you are trying to separate the blood. I have worked with Terumo, formerly Caridian, who uses centrifugal separation. There are also filtration devices available. If you want to talk I can give you some better insight if I understand a little more about your project.

My Dad built the first flow thru blood separator at IBM around 1970. Before that it was all done in centrifuges and poured off. Said he had to work to light wave tolerances.

Now sure what type of “separation” you are looking for but Harvest Technologies (now part of Terumo mentioned above) was founded by a few guys who spun off from Haemonetics years ago. There may be similarities with Haemo devices but may be more in line with what you are looking for.

Regarding blood separation there are two main categories of devices, apheresis devices ( donor connected) and automatic blood separation from a unit of whole blood. On apheresis there are few main companies worldwide Fresenius, Fenwal, Haemonetics and Terumo. Regarding separation from whole blood you can also check delcon and biosafe.

I have been with COBE Laboratories, which included COBE BCT (The BCT stands for Blood Component Technology), which then became Gambro BCT, then CaridianBCT, and is now TerumoBCT for 21 years. An important question is if you’re interested in Apheresis equipment (separating the blood components as they are extracted from the body) or automated whole blood processing (blood bank Manufacturing process). Well, either way, we’re the world leader in the field. Understand that MOST blood-bank manufacturing is still done via manual processes. Despite what Daniele Zanotti says above (“Sorin Group is a global leader in blood separation. You might want to check with their subsidiary in Arvada (by the way, it used to be the main old COBE blood-separation business facility).”), The COBE Arvada plant was not involved in blood separation – that was COBE Cardiovascular, which made blood oxygenators, and equipment associated with open heart surgery. Hi Steven, Fenwal ( Fresenius bought Fenwal last year ) , Cobe ( Terumo bought Cobe also ) , Fresenius , Heamonetics ,Dideco (Italian compay ) are the major cell separation e/q producers. Most of them located in states. Only Heamonetics produce some OEM products in China ( or copy MCS) . There are two type equipments one is continous flow the other intermittent type. This e/q collects mainly platelet and MNC ( stem cell ) and also makes plasma excahange / red cell exchange etc. What you want to collect? Fenwal Alyx collects packed red cell of 2 units in continous system.This m/c has high technology so in my point of wiev you can not find OEM .If you need details I can help you. BR. Osman.
