ResMed is a case study in how a medical device company can use data to revolutionize healthcare. If you have any interest in big data in healthcare, I urge you to watch his presentation.

A highlight of his comments:
• “Miniaturization got us number one in Asia Pacific and Europe, digital got us number one in the US and North America.”
• ResMed just started shipping the AirMini, the world’s smallest CPAP device (roughly 5″ x 3″ x 2″).
• They changed the basic competition as first movers in data. They now put a wireless communications chip that requires the patient to do nothing inside every single sleep apnea and COPD device they sell.
• How his multiple investments in Software-as-a-Service lowered his costs and created recurring revenue streams.
• “We get data to the cloud every day. We now have over one billion nights of sleep data. We’re lowering costs for sleep apnea and COPD therapy and increasing patient adherence.”
• He discussed his AirView physician management software and how patients are overwhelmingly interested in their data so they can track their therapy.
• The 200,000-patient study that lowered the suffocation index and had a positive economic impact on the healthcare system for untreated apneas.
